The 'obvious intent' of the founding fathers was, in fact, to create a government that had no business in religion.

The Constitution contains no references to God or religion. None.

The First Amendment was meant to reinforce the separation of Church and State, by prohibiting the involvement of the federal goverment in any religious activities, laws, etc. It grants no powers to the federal government over religion.

Although our founding fathers were mostly very religious, they were wise enough to see the folly of having a federal government that could interfere with one's religious beliefs. The omission of references to God in the original Constitution was intentional and, I believe, extremely telling as to their intent.

Since goverment has no business in religion, they have no business inserting 'under God' into a patriotic oath that is recited by millions of children each day.
