You are missing the point, entirely.
The fact that the founding fathers were religious, but purposely prohibited the federal government from interfering, is one of the greatnesses of the Constitution. That way, the rights of all, including those of minority religious (Muslims) and non-religions (athiests) are protected, along with those of the majority religion, equally.
There is nothing about 'abstention from religion' in it. You are free to follow the religion of your choice, as long as you don't violate the rules and laws that are meant to protect others. That is, if your religion dictates 'an eye for an eye' and you interpret that to mean you should kill Muslims, you will be outside the law.
There have been many theocracies in history, and all have shown that a government based on religion results in corruption, repression, and murder. I'm surprised the right takes this position, as we see what a theocracy in Iran and Afghanistan has done. |
