GZ,
I admire many Republicans:
Abraham Lincoln, Theodore Roosevelt, John Linsdsey, Jim Jeffords, Nelson Rockefeller, Dwight Eisenhower, William F. Buckley, Jr., Barry Goldwater, John McCain, Charles Grassley, Tom McCall, Jay Hammond, Earl Warren, Everett Dirksen to name a few.
What I find absolutely common to all these men is integrity and honesty. Though, of course some have their pecadillos.
So the party isn't completely reprehensible by any means and, frankly, I've been trying to become a Republican for a decade. But I keep getting repulsed by the wing of the party that is now in charge. That is, the wing that lies, cheats and engages in criminal behaviour while hypocritically proclaim to be patriots.
The sort of reprehensible and dangerous man like White House Chief of Staff Andrew Card who last week was in New Hampshire declaring his patriotism to George Bush. WARNING: This is the same language used by Goebbels, Goerring and the reprehensible crew that created Hitler. Patriotism to one man is sick. And that's what the Republican Party must counteract at this time. The cult of personality has no good ends. It only leads to national tragedy, as one man's ego overwhelms all good sense.
