The zipcode-based "find out how much your home is worth" sites are pure marketing scams. The fact that one fills out a form and submits it is proof. That, and the granularity of zipcodes.

A more interesting site is one I have used many times to check the most recent sales prices of houses on streets I know. For example, my own street.

list.realestate.yahoo.com

This and similar sites show actual sales price data, as recorded by public law. One can check on nearby houses similar to one's own, check trends in neighborhoods, etc.

And do it for any nearly any neighborhood, anywhere in the U.S. (a handful of states don't release the data).

I've done it many times and have never gotten any solicitations tied to my queries that I know of.
