People who live in lily-white suburbs with public schools supported by a discriminatory system of taxation favoring their schools rarely see the need for choice. Those left behind do. In large numbers.

Serious proposals to truly equalize educational opportunity and spending are invariably adamantly opposed by these same people, in the interest of "local control," or other such code phrases, of course. What it really amounts to is covert racial and socio-economic discrimination.
