I think abortion rights is one of those areas that tears our society apart- but I can't think of another way to address it. Public schools on the other hand seem to me a way to keep people together, and thus actually help to lessen (imo only of course) the stresses caused by divisive issues like abortion. If you can put a human face on someone who holds a belief quite quite different from your own, frequently you can be more tolerant (but not always, of course). By sitting in seats next to people fo very different beliefs, I think society is better served by public schools. Private schools tend to be centered around different ideologies, not necessarily religious, but almost always separatist in some way. If only in the desire to get away from "all those other students".

I understand your arguments. And they certainly make sense to many people.
