Nadine, I think US should not have come out that sharply against Arafat since by doing so they are sounding like Israel. Now if the reports that they had consulted with Saudi and Egypt and had their OK is true, then that is only half the battle. It is important to ensure that the Palestenians do not vote Arafat back. And the US could have achieved this by remaining silent on the issue of Arafat. Just a diplomatic approach. I am sure you caught Powell's interview on TV yesterday when he was directly asked if the US would refuse to deal with Arafat if he got elected. He was cornered by the interviewer.

And even if Arafat is not elected and we have someone else, say a moderate, that person would have a problem controlling the Hamas, Islamic Jihad and the Hezbollah. It is they who are creating the problem. I wonder why the IDF is not targeting them and instead is just concentrating on the Ramallah. After all, the Mossad is very capable along with the IDF to go in and get the head of the Hezbollah and the blind cleric whi is the spiritual leader.head of Hamas. I am sure the US and the EU would give their quiet OK if they did that. Instead they keep going after Arafat which to me is a waste of their time.
