Yes, it's possible that under such unremitting stress some of the family members came to identify with the cat. Perhaps that's why it took them so many hours to call for help: in their confusion, some of them thought they were part of the cat's gang, or even that they were themselves cats. Maybe the family members began launching themselves about the living room, too, accounting for the bloodiness of the scene discovered later by the police.
