The pending break-up of Vivendi should be of interest to those interested in Infospace's fortunes. Two years ago, Vodafone and Vivendi formed a partnership called Vizzavi. Vizzavi was to be Vodafone's mobile internet portal and Vivendi's point of distribution for all of its vast entertainment content "anywhere, anytime". Vivendi also took a stake in a French wireless carrier called Cegetal to further this vision. Well, Vizzavi has lost more than half a billion dollars since its inception. Debt ratings agencies have been pilloring Vivendi for continuing to supporting it financially as a never-ending black hole for hard capital to disappear into. The man at Vivendi who championed Vizzavi, Messier, has just resigned and it is expected that Vivendi will divest itself of its stake in Cegetal as a small part of its debt reduction program. Under these circumstances, it is reasonable to expect that Vizzavi may be radically restructured or else eliminated as well. That the foundations upon which Vivendi's conception of what Vizzavi would potentially be are now in motion must necessarily present Infospace with opportunity to exploit if only Jain and his crew can.
