Glad things are running more stable for you now.

The driver issue, I agree is maddening. WinXP is supposed to run with "certified" drivers, although it can frequently run OK with older drivers. I swear, I had problems with a "certified" driver that did not go away until I used an older driver.

You say your event log icon changes color. I haven't seen that one. What colors are involved?

One problem I am having with a a group of PCs with one PC on a dial up modem all using WinXP Pro. All the group PCs shared the modem using ICS (Internet Connection Sharing). This works a lot better than earlier versions. Shortly after the install, the PC with the modem started dialling the modem like every 1 to 10 minutes all day long. I tracked it down over several days and discovered all sorts of "services" wanting to "phone home".

There was Norton Systemworks, Norton Anti-virus, Windows Update, Help Support Center, etc. etc. I had to clobber the auto dial up in each PC as each PC can dial the PC with the modem through ICS. Trying to track which product was dialing through Task Manager was daunting. I finally found a nifty way to trap outside access. I installed ZoneAlarm on each PC and had it prompt for any outside access attempt. This tells you which PC and which application wants to dial the modem (or access the Internet if you are on cable, ADSL, etc.)

I guess those of us on permanently online networks don't realize how much PCs "phone home" everyday. I am not even sure if any of this is for illegitimate purposes. One day I will put some energy into this.
