The money did disappear.

The equity markets are not like the commodity markets, where there's a winner for every loser. Even for the most heavily shorted stocks, the number of longs outnumber the shorts more than fivefold.

Two years ago, people owned $30 billion in WCOM bonds. Now those bonds are worth about $1 billion. The other $29 billion is gone. INTC had a market cap of $500 billion then. It's closer to $100 billion now. That difference is gone, it didn't go into someone else's pocket.
