The industry is in ways a victim of its own success.

True, from an engineering point of view anyway.

But also true is that the disk drive industry has been the victim of the same sort of ego-driven management that has produced disasters in many other areas now being revealed. Over the years we've had too many companies that designed their business plans to allow profitability only with dominant market shares. Common sense will tell most that it's impossible to have 5 companies in an industry with 40% market share. But these guys wanted to build empires, not manage profitable companies. They had blatant disregard for shareholder value, only wishing to expand their domain.

So, instead of being rewarded for investing in a critical technology, investors found that had financed a gang war between maniacal warlords. It's one of the sorriest examples of management I've ever seen.
