OT ... OT ... War movies.
Sharp, I have a fairly good sized War movie collection. The recent Pearl Harbor will not make that collection. I borrowed the DVD from a friend and it's headed back without a second viewing.
Full Metal Jacket is the closet movie I've seen to what "real" Marine Corp boot camp is like. Of course, we'll never see the real thing on film. ;)
Even the documentaries I've seen on Discovery or TLC, about the "Crucible," doesn't completely provide the true flavor of boot camp.
>>> Black Hawk down was fairly realistic, but frustrating to watch - why couldn't they just call up a C-130 gunship to lay some chain gun fire on the converging mobs??? <<<
The administration at the time, refused to provide C-130 support or light tank support. In their infinite wisdom, they thought nation building consisted of sending in a swat team.
The rules of engagement, as administered by the administration at that time, dictated that they didn't want women and children getting hit. The "skinnies" knew this and saw to it that women and children were among the mobs.
So, Americans died because too many Americans don't understand that if you're going to commit to a war like activity, war must be carried out. Collateral damage does and is expected to occur. Too bad, too sad! If we, as Americans, can't deal with that, stop sending our men in harms way.
Sharp, at the risk of me being labelled, "Un-American," I'm sickened by the survivors of the WTC arguing and demanding millions of dollars in claims, when the men that die in trying in bringing the terrorists to justice, are rewarded with their surviving wife receiving just $833 a month and each surviving child just over $200 a month until their 18th birthday.
Sort of shows how far we've come as a society that wants to sue for anything and expects to be rewarded for it.
