For all those folks out there who love to hate lawyers, Martha's case is a good illustration of why it's important to get your good advisors (legal, tax, religious, medical, you name it) early. Had Martha simply called up a decent securities lawyer after Xmas and before New Year's, she could have spent maybe $2-3,000 and received good advice (keep your mouth shut, do not try to manufacture an "innocent explanation,") and could have acted in time to avoid the $400 million hit to her personal wealth and the now necessary expense of perhaps a couple of hundred grand in legal/trial/p.r. expenses to try to salvage what she can.

Oy vey, dis is not a good thing.

Tsk, tsk.
