US Prepares for First Oil Direct From Russia

HOUSTON, July 2 (energy24.com) - Officials of the Bush Administration and members of Congress are preparing to welcome the first-ever direct shipment of oil from Russia to the United States on Wednesday.

The shipment is being supplied by YUKOS Oil Co, Russia's second-largest oil company, via the supertanker Astro Lupus, which will be anchored between 25 and 75 miles off Galveston.

The US believes the planned delivery is the most recent demonstration of an ever-improving relationship between the two, which also includes the signing of an energy cooperation statement by US President George W. Bush and Russian President Vladimir Putin during their recent summit in Moscow.

Following the September 11 attacks, there has been renewed focus on the need to reduce US dependence on oil imports from the Middle East.

Russia, which has vast oil and gas reserves, has become a potential supplier of oil to partially displace oil from unstable countries in the Middle East.
