Why Intel is a buy.

The bottom line is AMD is on its heels right now. The performance gap vs Intel it widening fast, AMD is competing at the low end with Athalon vs Celeron. Hammer is a 2003 product which will be out performed by Intel's 32bit offering. AMD has not been making the capital investments required to offer a reliable supply of future products to enough OEMs if they even wanted the chip.

If the market turns up near term, Intel wins big because they have the products and capacity in place. They will be able to manage ASP by managing the mix of products they make available to the customers... box makers will choose to take a few more faster CPUs if Intel says that's what's available... and no AMD to threaten with!!!

If the market remains soft, AMD loses even more money, and fails to invest enough for any upturn. People begin to question their ability to survive. IT managers and box OEMs question investment required to qualify the Hammer for use in their shops (Hardware a minor portion for TCO). Intel in the meantime is making faster cheaper 32 bit products and they are fully invested in Itanium, which offers an alternative to a Sun that appears to be running our of gas and to legacy systems that cost an arm and a leg to maintain, and cannot perform like new systems. My belief is Intel will also begin to promise 64bit extensions to the Pentium line (will not threaten Itanium which will still have the high end where Intel does not currently play). If you take a long view of the market, Intel is a good buy.

And yes, the billionth computer was just sold, but I have owned have owned over 10 of them between work and home only 3 of them are currently in service. My guess is there are a lot of computers that need to be replaced and there are a lot of people still looking to get there first. When the slack comes out of the rope it could be a fun ride for a while.

Just my opinion.

And yes in the interest of full disclosure, I am long the stock
