Question for the thread.

I teach 2nd and 3rd graders right now. Of course we did a July 4th craft today. And as I was spelling things on the board related to our project I put up Independence Day. My kids ONLY association with these words was the movie. They did not know we were once a colony of England. They had never heard of the revolutionary war. They did not know that George Washington had been a general, and of course did not realize he had been a general in the revolutionary war because they had never heard of the revolutionary war. Far more important than the pledge- WHY do our kids not know any history????

I remember before I started school I had a record with Paul revere's ride on it. I used to ride my rocking horse and pretend I was Paul revere. Does anyone here have kids? Have they learned much US history? If they are 2nd or 3rd graders- have they HEARD of the revolutionary war???? I am trying to figure out how aberrant my class is.
