In 1998, he said, the party decided to run a multi-million-dollar ad campaign on the Lewinsky theme — a “huge strategic error,” Watts says. “We tried too hard to invoke the public’s disgust over the travails and peccadilloes of President Clinton. Lord knows, there were plenty of them, but we made a strategic mistake by making Bill Clinton the focus of the election.” The GOP lost seats.
