Lucent to Sell Services Unit to Venture Firm

biz.yahoo.com

"The company is simply getting out of a business it did not run well or profitably, said Dean McMann, chief executive of Ranford, a New York firm that tracks the consulting industry.

"Lucent is trying to divest of things that are a drag on their profits," he said. "If that entity wasn't performing well, which it probably wasn't because nothing in consulting is performing well right now, then just getting rid of if might end up being positive."

McMann estimated Lucent received 0.65 times the division's sales, which were at least several hundred million dollars. He added that venture capital firms never spend large chunks of cash on consulting businesses, so the deal was likely for a small amount of cash up front with the rest paid over a longer period of time.
