I do not think we can make people say words like "under God", as part of a pledge, in a large room of peers with an official figure sanctioning the whole thing, and compare that to wearing a flaming red mohawk (unless of course that mohawk was worn in observance of some deeply held conviction. Our religious convictions or lack there of should not, imo, entitle us to a dose of ridicule if we do not happen to be in step with the majority, nor should we be forced to bow our heads to the God of the majority. It may be under God today, but it could be under something else tomorrow.

I think it is dangerous when you are willing to consider humiliating children, for the religious beliefs of their parents, and think that is ok. I think all beliefs are deserving of my respect when I act in the guise of public servant. In my personal capacity, in my writing, I choose to attack some beliefs I find dangerous to my liberty (because they are avowedly anathema to my liberty) - but certainly not as a representative of anything other than myself.
