that is not completely clear to me. As a processor Itanium maybe a better solution for supercomputers where software support is not a big issue. But the cost of Itanium would very much depend on overall unit shipments - fixed cost business. OTOH p4 volumes are much higher.

The other big negative for Itanium is that there is no alternative supplier. While intel may view it as a potential advantage it may actually work against adoption of ia64.
