OT Victor, I am only trying to resolve one issue:
Mindmeld and I have had a lot of discussions on a different thread. Therefore I am interested in what he thinks about a lot of issues. When he wrote #60120 <<As much as the liberals hate Bush for being popular, I think a statement like that says more about the liberals than about Bush. You don't graduate from both Harvard and Yale if you have an IQ of 88, no matter how rich and influential your father is.>> I decided to respond.
Attacking one source that collects a bunch of quotes from Dubya does not accomplish much. Direct quotes are direct quotes. And there are actually several other books that have been written about the idiot president. And, FWIW, Slate is not the flip side of Rush Limbaugh. I would expect that Slate would have collected the bubbaisms you mention, if it existed then. Timothy Noah has a column on Slate called "Whopper of the Week" slate.msn.com In this column he presents the biggest lie of the previous week. He explains the context, and then either presents the facts, or presents the same person saying the opposite thing some months before. If you notice, in the 2001 archives, Tom Daschle and Hillary Rodham Clinton were pilloried, as appropriate given the lies they told.
Few of us would care to debate Bush vs Gore, or Republicans vs Democrats, or liberal vs conservative. It does surprise me the discover how angry some people get when I post that Bush's verbal ability is pathetic. And that his verbal ability is very closely tied to his intellect. So what? Clinton was a sex addict and a liar. So what? Gore exaggerates and reinvents himself and it hurt his credibility. So what?
Each politician has strengths and weaknesses. Most politicians lie a lot. Its an occupational necessity. Most politicians are right on some issues and wrong on others. Same goes for political parties. Who would want to defend the Republican's positions on Big Tobacco or Corporate Welfare? And who want to defend the Democrats positions on plaintiff's attorneys, and unions?
Bottom line, lets not put our politicians, political parties, or political orientations on pedestals.
