WASHINGTON (Reuters) - The top White House adviser on Asia has resigned his post just weeks before President George W. Bush makes a major trip to the region, U.S. officials said on Friday.

Torkel Patterson, who served as the National Security Council's senior director for Asian affairs for less than one year, left his position "for personal reasons" a week ago, an NSC spokesman said.
