This table is based on 2 points for a win and 1 point for a draw
because that was the point system used from the beginning of World Cup history.
Only in recent years have 3 pts been given for a win.
Only matches in the World Cup finals (not qualifying games) are counted.
Matches decided on penalties are counted as draws in this table.
The red (negative) and blue (positive) numbers on the far right of the table
indicate the changes from 1998 to 2002.

Comment to the updated table:

No changes in the top five of the list. Spain took advantage of France's
poor showing and edged past them by one point.
Sweden climbed four more places and is now on a very respectable 8th position.
Former minnows South Korea, Turkey and Japan all made giant leaps on the table
and Senegal in their first ever tournament managed to put almost 30 teams
with WC records behind them, not bad.
Saudi Arabia suffered the heaviest fall from 40 to 47.
