Here's a bit of an interesting aside. Remember our carnivorous ground squirrel? We are not alone: others have seen this too. See excerpt below. Using that Internet, we asked Professor Peg Halloran about it. She's a squirrel expert who teaches at both the University of Colorado and the Air Force Academy. Apparently, Sheila's sighting was quite unusual. "I have heard stories of squirrels eating birds, but have never seen it first hand," Professor Halloran wrote in an e-mail. "I have seen Abert squirrels chewing on carrion - bones - of presumably a rodent. In addition Pine squirrels (Tamiasciurus hudsonicus) have been known to be quite the predator - even taking an occasional rabbit or hare." There's a squirrel I'm not sure I'd want to meet.
