Cell phone production takes off in China and Taiwan

TAIPEI, Taiwan -- The Taiwanese mobile phone industry will achieve nearly 150% year-on-year growth in terms of production, surpassing 7 million units for the first time in history, according to a report from the Market Intelligence Center (MIC).
Taiwan's mobile phone industry will continue to post strong growth, thanks in part to the island's OEM (original equipment manufacturer) and ODM (original design manufacturer) strategies. Leading handset makers in Taiwan include Acer, Arima, DBTEL, GVC, and others.
Local companies are building handsets for Motorola, Sony-Ericsson, Siemens, and others, according to the MIC, based in Taipei. In addition Taiwan will soon add Nokia to its customer portfolio, as the world's leading mobile phone maker starts outsourcing production of its value line GSM handsets, according to the MIC.
On the other side of the Taiwan Strait, China's mobile phone industry continues to develop. For example, Nokia is building up an industry cluster based on Toyota's "just-in-time" production model at its StarNet (International) Industrial Park in Beijing, according to MIC.
The site will cover 100 hectacres upon completion of its second stage of construction in December 2003 and already boasts an annual production capacity of 25 million to 30 million units.
Motorola has also built up an industry cluster around its facility in Tianjin, which is shooting for a production volume of 13 million to 15 million units in 2002, the report said.
Korean manufacturers have finally received production and sales licenses from the Chinese government's Ministry of Information Industry (MII). In 2002, Samsung hopes to achieve an output of 1.5 million units at its joint venture factory in Tianjin, the report said. |
