Penni, this type of thing happens to everybody. The thing that concerns me now as I've become older, and I think a bit wiser, is I now realize the ramifications to these unproven "the sky is falling" type headlines.
Andrew probably then would have said the same thing he is saying now about Global Warming. It's better to be safe then sorry. Well in the meantime thousands of farmers in Washington State lost their life savings on that campaign against alar. A campaign which was proven completely bogus. If someone at the San Francisco Chronicle would have just said. Wait a minute! Is this really true? Before running headline after headline, a reasonable conclusion could have been drawn.
Instead papers such as those are more interested in selling the next days rag instead of getting at the truth. I very rarely read something in the papers nowadays and say. That's the truth. Christine seems to do it daily. Whatever is printed must be true, is her axiom. Today thousands of people have been thrown out of work, in industries such as those that make CFC's, or (as that piece described) people in impoverished countries needing refrigerated medicines could be dying because of "what might be".
I would like to see the look on Andrew or Christine's face as they explain to the mother of a dying child in Mongolia, that the reason your son or daughter couldn't get the medicine they needed is because we are concerned about Global Warming.
These are real, questions that should have been answered before we banned CFC's and went on this UN sponsored campaign to rid the world of what could potentially be a very small problem. My point continues to be, hey, take a step back. really look at the scientific evidence. If it's inconclusive, as it clearly seems to be with regards to Global Warming, then just continue studying the problem. Don't start making laws which are going to throw people out of work, or cause people to die because of your fears.
Rarely do things on a Global scale happen without some serious lead time. Time is not an enemy, it's a friend to be used wisely.
