Saying "under God" when one does not believe in God is insulting and ridiculous and is an affirmation of something in words, imo. It is equivalent to being made to say "under Santa", or "under Satan"- neither of which I happen to believe in, and having to pledge "under" either would insult me. I do not think Christians would like to say a pledge with the words "under Satan" in it even if they did not believe in Satan, do you?

Of course no one should have to say under anything supernatural, though perhaps we could say something natural like "under the constitution" or "under the protection of the laws of our great country"- now those are not religious words, but are very worthy of veneration.
