IFT - The Telecommunication Company of Iran (TCI) is to sign an expansion agreement of the mobile phone network in the near future.

According to reports a further 1 million mobile phones will be added to the existing network. TCI is presently reviewing the proposals submitted by the Finnish firm Nokia , the German Siemens and the Swedish Ericson.

It is anticipated that TCI will invite all three companies to participate in the project in the form of a joint venture. The project will be implemented in two phases which will be worth $39 million and $78 million, respectively.

TCI initially intended to expand the mobile network operation outside the capital only. However, it was later decided to include the expansion of mobile phone facilities in Tehran in the project. The said project is in compliance with the governments Third 5-Year Development Plan (2000 - 2005).
