An inveterate political gambler, he has long gambled on gaining international legitimacy as a springboard to Palestinian statehood.

That's why Mr Bush's decision to delegitimise him is so important.

And, second, he's older and frailer than he was. He will be 73 next month. To believe he can go on defying the odds, escaping from every tight corner, until the bitter end may prove his ultimate undoing.
