That's interesting viewpoint, never heard that interpretation of the use of the atomic bombs. I've always known that the USSR entered the Pacific war as late as it did in order to gain an advantage without any costs, both human and economic. They had lost 20,000,000 citizens by that time and had an economy that was in ruins. It's also well accepted that the tremendous loss of life was due, in part, to Stalin's incompetence and paranoia. The economic situation in the USSR at the time is well described elsewhere.

Have you read Fortune's article on the coming war against Saddam? July 22/no. 14, page 48. Pretty sobering.
