I'm assuming that no one here believes that the movingness of that story about patriotism and individual courage has anything whatever to do with the successful campaign by the Knights of Columbus in the 1950's to insert the words "under God" into the Pledge of Allegiance to the United States of America.

I spoke yesterday to a patriotic American fellow who was 19 when the Pledge was changed, and he says he was so bitter at having the change rammed down his throat that he hasn't been able to recite it without feeling resentful and "outside" since. He's a patriot, but he's also an agnostic, he said.

There are a lot of those around -- non-Christian Americans who want the Pledge to be inclusive of them and their children.

BTW, atheists and agnostics aren't immune from the belief that "giving up your life for your country is an honor." The pledge shouldn't unnecessarily disrespect our atheist war dead, imo. It is simply about loving, and being loyal to, our "indivisible" nation and what it stands for.

Or was.
