"The point is how is anyone really hurt?"

There was a guy who could see the underlying forces and intentions of the universe who went a walking along the beach one day. As he was passing a small fishing village he noticed the lone fishing craft anchored off shore. So, he swam out to the boat and punched holes in it with a small hatchet. The boat sunk.

The livelyhood of all the villagers and their families was dependant on the catches that could have been brought in by this boat. Now the villagers would be hard pressed to survive.

A passerby had seen what had happened and confronted the guy on his act of destruction. So, he offered an explanation. Here it is:

A war lord is preparing to attack the villages in this region so that he can take their boats. When he has a fleet large enough to accommodate his soldiers he is going to invade the region.

For many years the villagers who owned the sunken boat have been involved in so much petty bickering and discord, that their lives have been reduced to finagling enough of the catch simply to subsist to the next outing. When one of the villagers experienced a set back, such as illness, the others viewed it as an opportunity to take a bigger portion of the catch for themselves. They would subvert efforts of fellow villagers if it meant someone might miss out on participation in the fishing expeditions. They competed in this destructive way as a matter of daily existence.

By losing their boat, the villagers will be forced to come together and reconsider the course of their lives of interdependance. They will consider the higher purpose of living in a relative and complimentary community. They will rebuild not only the fishing vessel but their relationships in the process. They will be prepared to answer threats from invaders with a united front.

How is anyone really hurt? Beats me, I aint no mystic.
