No, the Constitution does not say anything about "unless 90 percent of the people agree," when it comes to religion. You are correct about that.
However, The preface to the Constitution says:
We the People of the United States, in Order to form a more perfect Union, establish Justice, insure domestic Tranquility, provide for the common defence, promote the general Welfare, and secure the Blessings of Liberty to ourselves and our Posterity, do ordain and establish this Constitution for the United States of America.
A capitalized "Blessings" in 18th century English language usage would surely imply a God-acknowledging connotation ... Don't you think, honestly?
And the preface sets the tone for all the passages that follow.
So much of our debates revolves around the exact words and phrases the framers used ... and I think this particular expression deserves consideration. If the framers generally believed that Liberty for humankind originates as a Blessing from above, then I believe their sentiments would have supported the view that our nation exists under God. |
