Here in the States it's common for us to refer to ourselves as "Americans" and when reference is made here to "America" it's almost always intended to be synonymous with the United States.

I guess since it sounds so stupid to be called a United Statesian then the next best thing to do, only because it sounds good, was take the name of an Italian guy that never even saw these particular shores of North America that went on to become the United States.
