But what is it for the rational humanist? Can it be anything other than an act of madness? Of stupidity?

I cannot understand why people cannot appreciate how a humanist could give up his life in the best interests of humanity or of those he loves, just like anyone else. He wouldn't do it for the virgins, for sure, but why not for his family or his country or the future of the human race?

And if a Christian gives up his life to gain heaven, is that really such a noble thing, an "act of faith and morality"?
