I was going to link you to some shocking and heart-breaking stats re high schools in Washington D.C. As you may know, per pupil spending there is near the top in the nation.

Unfortunately, the information available on the Washington Post web site has been dumbed down to the point of being useless. Probably some kind of self esteem thing for the district.

What you would have learned had the data not been removed is that the student to teacher ratio is under 20:1 (significantly, if memory serves) and 80 percent or more or the teachers have at least a master's degree. You would have also seen that there is no shortage of things like computers. What there is a shortage of is kids attending class or showing the barest mastery of basic subject matter.

At the other end of the spectrum you have school districts like Palos Verdes in California where the funding is only a little more than half that in D.C. and yet student achievement is extremely high.

It ain't the money - it's the parents. Sadly enough, all the school funding in the world isn't going to replace missing dads or get mom out of the hell she's living in.

I think the teachers we have are damn good (in spite of being politically goofy). Unfortunately, there are a lot of unfit parents in the education equation.

I can't resist a footnote. The schools in Sausalito, CA spend a whopping $16K+ per pupil. The achievement stats indicate taxpayers aren't getting anything near their money's worth. Probably no correlation between that and the percentage of enlightened, new-age parents who've broken the bonds of religious superstition and the values that go with it. Just wondering, that's all.
