President Eisenhower, signing the legislation for inserting the words "under God" into the pledge, said

"From this day forward, the millions of our schoolchildren will daily proclaim in every city and town, every village and rural schoolhouse, the dedication of our nation and our people to the Almighty."

That seems such a strange thing for a president of all the people (in a country under our Constitution) to say, but of course it isn't. It's just frank.
