You might be interested in Edward Said's review of B. Lewis' latest in Harpers. An incredibly vicious ad hominem attack that never gets off the ground, though it does disparage Lewis for his age, Anglo-Saxonism (?), mistakes concerning the ME's taste for Western music, and a host of other irrelevancies, including Lewis' failure to note that Islam has a complex history, a silly point since any half-witted reader should be able to deduce that a centuries-old religion is necessarily historically complex.

I think I'm going to stop reading Harper's. The Said piece was a marvel of poisonous invective. The piece by Fish was better than a sleeping pill. The fiction was derivative--a short story by a guy doing a Cormac McCarthy imitation.

The latest issue made me wonder how Harper's stays afloat.
