Great story about Ted Williams. He never forgave the press for hinting he was less than patriotic when he got a deferment during the early part of the war to care for his ailing mother. The jackals (like the ones here;) were proved wrong by his future service at the end of WWII and as a Marine Corps fighter pilot in Korea.
