Combined that same week with warnings from Cheney about "unpatriotic criticism", it is clearly the road to fascism, pure and simple. That's why they had to backtrack, fast, at least publicly. Behind the scenes, we now see they were cooking up the Homeland Security Act to do covertly what they signaled overtly.

The real question is what control there is by government-sponsorship in the media. It will be interesting if that ever surfaces again, like it did in the '70's re:"The Mighty Wurlitzer", etc. This time, however, Tenet won't be another Colby, and blab about it.
