I missed Besieged. I agree that the Buddha parts are pretty, and make a good childrens' movie, but I do not think they are quite good enough for a theatrical movie, either. I also agree that the monks were good, and endearing, even. I started to watch "The Sheltering Sky", but I do not recall finishing it. Maybe I just gave up. That was the Paul Bowles bio, set in North Africa, right? By the way, I kind of liked "1900", although it had some clunky moments, and the symbolic end was a tad dopey......
