If they find discrepancies, their first duty is to inform the company, not the public, not analysts, not Congress, about what they've found.

Just for the record, the auditing standards actually indicate that it is not part of the auditor's responsibility to report fraud to outside parties, unless the fraud warrants inclusion in the audit report.
