To some extent it is the religion (or way of life or whatever you want to call it), since the religions demarcate the tribal boundaries clearly for people who want to be zealots. Neither religion is "guilty" or "innocent" except in so far as these religions allow patrons to identify with something greater than themselves, which they submerge into, lose their own individual identity in, and become capable of giving up their lives in order to promote (in their minds) the greater cause of Hinduism or Muslimism. Obviously any group can do this, it doesn't have to be a religious group. And no one is hated more than an apostate- which is why I think zealots tend to kill moderates of their own group. Nothing is more damaging to the zealots self esteem than someone who holds the same beliefs, but in a kinder gentler manner.

As to Osama, I think he is dead. I don't think he could resist needling us with his presence, if he was alive. He seemed to be a bit of an egotist.
