Brilliant -- a sociologist who now claims not to understand the difference between race and culture.

That's a wonderful misreading of Win's point. It is precisely when the two are collapsed into one another and the latter is read as if it was produced by the former, that one has racism. Frankly, as for Win's point, I think he was trying for the ironically humourous tone, not the condemnatory one. At least that's what I liked about it.

You've given my new glasses quite a workout. So to change the subject just to cool matters down a bit, I've started using computer glasses for the first time. These are bifocals with the upper portion focused on a four feet distance. I no longer have to crank my neck way up and look down on my monitor. My neck thanks my optometrist.

Now on to thinking up summer reading lists. Should I put Orientalism at the top? Nah, I would never do that. Actually, I might. Because while information is terribly important and this thread has been a goldmine for that, the frame is equally if not more important. And Orientalism is about the frame. I think it's Whitehead who says somewhere that the questions are more important than the answers. Same point.
