A new form of light could replace candles and oil lamps.

The Re-light is a virtually indestructible, glowing plastic box that provides hours of illumination yet requires no mains electricity or replacement batteries.

It gets energy from the sun - powering up during the day and shining brightly at night.

The solar-powered light is designed to help out in places where there is no electricity.

The inventor Belgian-born Sylvain Willenz, 23, a design products student at the Royal College of Art in London, said: "Re-light is a square, portable light which has a solar panel on one side that powers up rechargable batteries.

"On the other side there are four white LEDs (light emitting diodes) which are very powerful and produce as much light as an oil lamp.

"A tilt switch inside means that when you turn it with the solar panel facing up, it switches off and is charging. When you turn it any other way, the light comes on."

The British Standards Institute last week handed the young inventor of the device a £2,000 environmental design award.

A major advantage of the Re-light is that it uses ultra cheap components. Willenz expected a commercial model to sell for around £4 to £6.

The device is currently undergoing a field trial in Angola with the aid organisation Medicins Sans Frontiere.
