You make it sound like the poles are (a) the sky is falling or (b) everything is peachy

The problem with (b) is the administration itself proclaiming we're doomed to more terrorism than ever, and the knowledge of the public that every foray into the hell of M.E. and Columbia is a golden invitation to more terrorism.

No amount of spin can counter that.
I do not know how the administration political planners could have assumed kicking the public in the crotch with warnings would always continue to increase the poll numbers? It always works once, but these guys are saying, "this could go on forever, I can live with that, can't you?", and hoping no one notices our foreign adventures tend to stimulate killing of our citizens here.

The solution would be full debate on how to deal with Islamists in ways that spare Americans "dirty bombs", biowarfare, and other nasty stuff that looks thought up by RAND studies, but are attributed to Islamists.

But no such debate occurs in the WH, just plans for an all-pervasive Homeland Security force for an all-powerful central gov't.
