When I think of men like Carnegie (pinkertons right?) capitalism and conscience isn't really something that comes to mind. Capitalism and ruthlessness, yes, not capitalism and conscience. Seems to me many of our corporate giants have been able to leave their consciences at the door of the boardroom (or maybe they leave them in church?). I don't see it as a new thing. Most people tend to be able to put away their consciences when making a buck demands it- or at the very least they are able to engage in distinction drawing that would make a lawyer jealous.

It is probably some genetic thing :-)
