On the credit card carrying balance, I believe the number you mentioned is the average balance PER credit card. The average family has multiple cards. I know 2 upper middle/lower upper class types (income in 120-200k range) with a USD 25-50k balance, looking to pay down quickly, and still not quick enough, facing employment restructuring.
