House Passes Bill to Arm All Airline Pilots
Wed Jul 10, 4:59 PM ET

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - The House of Representatives passed legislation on Wednesday that would arm U.S. commercial pilots on a voluntary basis as a last ditch effort to secure the cockpit.

The measure, a dramatic response to boost airline security almost a year after the Sept. 11 hijack attacks, passed 310-113.

It was approved after lawmakers removed a cap on the number of pilots who could carry guns and a restriction to limit the program to two years. The final bill gave the option to all airline pilots on a voluntary basis and made the program permanent.

The measure faces an uncertain future in the Senate, where key leaders do not support arming pilots.

The Bush administration also opposes it, saying stronger cockpit doors and undercover armed agents aboard aircraft were sufficient security steps that were safer than arming pilots with deadly force
